Ipsy! Yay? Or nay? 💄

17.12.15

I'm back with another beauty post!

Probably 6 months ago I signed up for ipsy for the first time. When I was thinking about whether I wanted to do this or not I went on a hunt to try to find reviews about their product/customer service etc.

For those of you who don't know what ipsy is, it is a monthly beauty subscription. You pay $10 a month (I'll get to that shortly) for usually five assorted beauty products delivered to your door. There are lots of competitors, but no one with the same price point as ipsy.

When I was first researching them I really found that the reviews were quite mixed. Some loved it and some hated it so this left me totally torn. I decided to try it, because realistically $10 a month is only a sacrifice of two coffees.

I really wanted to give you my own personal review as I found that because the reviews were so mixed this might help to give you another perspective of your looking at joining.

Here are my thoughts...

The pros

• Customer service
There are a lot of people out there saying that they have received low quality products and that they received broken packaging and that they are furious with ipsy. However, the end of these stories usually go like this "so I sent them an email and they replaced it for me, but I'm still mad!!!!"
Ok.
Yes it's frustrating to receive a broken package, of course. But the fact that they are willing to replace it for you just shows me how incredible of a company they are. As many others wouldn't do the same I'm sure.

I actually just cancelled my subscription (I know, spoiler alert.. Relax, I'll get there) and it was SO easy peasy lemon squeasy. I was shocked because I am TERRIFIED of monthly subscriptions. In my mind they are all a scam and they trick you in to paying them for life (evil laughter in the background) Fabletics? Forget about it. Adore me? Never. Just fab? You've got to be kidding. I've heard nightmares upon nightmares of people trying to get out of these services. So, when I signed up for this my honest to god thought was "okay, if I can't cancel for eternity at least it's only $120 a year." Seriously. I am a paranoid panda.

So when all I had to do to get out of this was click a button I was thrilled. I was already starting to practice my mom voice for whatever customer service rep got to feel my wrath on the phone, but luckily that didn't have to happen (you're welcome ipsy call center associates.)

• The value
Next, you're paying an incredibly low price for these products. Don't expect them to send you a YSL lipstick. To be honest I think they bags they send them in are worth more than the $10 subscription, so you're getting an impeccable deal. (Also, the bags are v cute and are great for stashing in your purse)

• The sizes
Think about samples at Sephora, and then double that. Except for mascara, they're usually equivalent. I was really expecting super super small samples but these are actually a great size.

Now...
The Cons

• Where the fuck am I ever supposed to buy these
Okay, this is an ISSUE. The whole reason people are supposed to subscribe to this is to get trials of products that they can order the full size of if they like them. I have never heard of so many of these brands before. Which is fine because they have all been pretty great products. But. What happens if I fall deeply in love with something and then can never find it again?! I feel like I had to cut the umbilical cord REAL quick before I got my heart broken.

• The price
Yeah, yeah this is an issue with everyone, all the time. So here's the problem. That $10... Not only does it not include tax, but it's also US dollars. Do you want to know how much a Canadian dollar is worth right now? $0.73, I shit you not. When I first signed up I was paying $14 a month which was still worth it to me. My last bill was $21. That was the last straw. It's really not their fault, this is mostly to do with the exchange rate right now but... Double. I just couldn't any more.

In conclusion, to me the cons outweighed to pros with ipsy. Take with this what you will but I hope that if you've been looking into subscribing this will be at least a little bit beneficial for you!
