How to stay productive while working from home, even though your dogs are begging you to cuddle....

8.12.15

Working from home can be a blessing and a curse.

Blessed because unlimited coffee, puppy company, blaring Adele (or j.biebs, whatever you're fancying right now) etc.

Cursed because......my bed

Here are some tips that I've figured really help to stay just as productive while working from home as you would if you were at the office!

1. WAKE UP

If you sleep in just because you think that you're working from home so you don't have to deal with the commute and making yourself look put together you're just going to mess your entire schedule up that day. Get up the same time you would for a normal day at work so that your body stays in its natural rhythm and you're not out of sorts the next real work day!

2. GET DRESSED

Number 1 brings me to this point. Do NOT, I repeat, do not stay in your pyjamas all day. Get dressed in something you would normally wear to work. I'm not saying get up and iron a three piece Armani pant suit..but like put some jeans on for gods sake. This will really help to get your mind started for the day, if you're lounging in pyjamas you'll feel way too comfy and way too tempted to crawl back into bed.

3. Speaking of bed.. GET OUT OF IT.

Working from inside your warm and toasty burrito, called bed, is pure torture. Do not do that to yourself. This will help you stay productive and not *accidentally* fall asleep (hi, guilty 💁🏻). This is also going to save you so much when it's time to actually go to bed that night. I find that if I'm too comfy all day I find it so hard to fall asleep that night.

Also dogs... I can't. They have magic powers that make you cuddle them. Try to avoid that.

4. Try to sit at a flat surface

This could be a desk, kitchen table, island, whatever it may be. Something to keep yourself upright and also organized. There's nothing more annoying than trying to work from the couch and losing your pens in between the cushions and wrinkling all of your papers.

5. TAKE BREAKS

Same as you would at work, take a lunch break, take a coffee break, give your mind a moment to breathe.

6. STIMULATE

There's a reason you don't have florescent lights at your house (I hope) and that's because they are not only obnoxious, but they're also not meant for living spaces. Bright lights, bright colours, pumping oxygen are all tricks that offices use to keep you stimulated at work. Try to imitate this at home. This can be different for everyone, but for me I really love to light some candles and also try to let as much natural light into my space as possible. For other this could be music, light television, essential oils, etc.

I hope these little tips and tricks help you to stay on task while at home whether you be working or studying. These have all been huge savers for me both while in university and at work!
